As promised, I am returning to you the results of the survey that many of you completed to help me provide better services to you. There were two common threads in the responses: First, most everyone, regardless of being a student, parent, or advocate, is concerned about the cost of college. And second, and this was most surprising to me, everyone felt trapped.
People expressed feeling that they were not going to be able to afford college and if something were to happen in order to support that process, it would somehow just happen for them. If not, then college wasn’t going to happen for themselves, their children, or the communities they serve.
If we include the time I spent studying education as the beginning of my teaching career, this year marks twenty years since I started. One of the first things I noticed in teaching in different communities and institutions around the world is that have things, be it knowledge or wealth or access, people just had more information. Knowledge truly is power.
With that, I have created four webinar series. Each webinar series will be given at a specific time with access to a recorded presentation for those of you who cannot make the time or would like to hear it again. The series will include the manual and Social Justice College Counseling: The Basics as an introduction. This means that regardless of where you are, you can have access to the information you need in order for your student to graduate from college with little debt.
The webinars are:
HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR COLLEGE CAREER IN SEVEN STEPS
-For students entering college or currently in college
HOW TO CREATE YOUR COLLEGE ACTION PLAN IN SEVEN STEPS
-For families of students in middle school or the early part of high school
HOW TO AFFORD COLLEGE IN SEVEN STEPS
-For anyone with students anywhere in the college-going process
HOW TO APPLY TO PUBLIC AND PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES IN SEVEN STEPS
-For rising 12th graders or rising 11th graders who are looking ahead
There is an explicit financial element in all four webinars.
