Who We AreIt took many years to develop the strategies that we employ through the various ventures and projects. Field notes is an opportunity to explain them more. It’s also an opportunity for me to think through new ideas.

What is an Essential Question?
Each course or lesson is designed around a series of essential questions. These questions look just like a question you may ask in your every day: What is that? How does this occur? Why did that happen that way?
What is Black History?
At the very least, Blackness is normalized for me. I quite comfortably see the world through a lens of Black identity.
What is Slavery?
The modern era is defined by the embeddedness and reliance on enslavement; that there is not an industry in the US that is not touched by dollars from enslavement; that there is not a university or educational system that was not touched by dollars from enslavement; that there is not generational wealth that is untouched by enslavement dollars.
What is Teaching?
Teaching has nothing to do with being smart, becoming smart, or activating an inherent smart in students who would otherwise not have a chance. This is because this definition is static, as if there is a definite goal or marker. If we consider learning to be a life-long practice, we understand teaching much differently.
